Franze quits Tigers

24/04/2006

Paul Franze has announced he is to quit Castleford Tigers less than a fortnight after arriving at The Jungle.

The 24-year-old centre switched codes for the Super League newcomers, joining from union side London Irish.

But Tigers spokesman David Smart revealed that the talented Australian intends to take a break from the game and has opted out of his contract.

"This is Paul's third straight season of rugby and he feels that he is struggling to come to terms with the rigors of back to back football," he said.

"However we are continuing to look to bring players into the club and we expect to be strengthened in the three-quarters ahead of the Salford match [on Sunday] with Michael Shenton and Gray Viane set to return."

Franze had previously played for Australian Rugby League sides Cronulla Sharks and Penrith Panthers before moving to London Irish in August last year.

He becomes the second player to quit the Tigers within a week coming after hooker Aaron Smith announced he was also taking a break from the game.

This latest news will hardly be welcomed by Tigers fans or indeed by head coach Terry Matterson who has seen his side struggle this season.

Castleford are currently embroiled in a relegation battle having won just three of their first 11 games.

They sit second from bottom, two points clear of Brian Noble's Wigan and level with Catalans Dragons.
