Gardner out "indefinitely" with eye injury
27/04/2007
St Helens winger Ade Gardner has been ruled out indefinitely after complications to an eye injury he sustained last week.
The 23-year-old was forced out of Saints' Super League match against Leeds Rhinos last weekend after he was involved in "an incident" in his home town of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria.
Gardner will now miss Sunday's trip to Harlequins and Saints coach Daniel Anderson said "his vision is impaired" and therefore a date for his return is unknown.
"There is bleeding in and around the eye and swelling," Anderson said.
"It is a concern. He won't play until the specialist gives him the green light. At the moment, it's indefinite."
St Helens are currently third in the Super League, two points behind joint-leaders Leeds and Bradford.
Gardner was the club's highest try-scorer in 2006 and could be a significant miss for the rugby league giants – he has scored five tries in five games so far this season and is one of the club's most potent attacking threats.
He was also selected for the 2006 Great Britain squad as a result of his excellent form, but missed out on the recent Tri-Nations series against Australia and New Zealand.
