Giants handed Aspinwall blow
10/07/2007
Huddersfield Giants winger Martin Aspinwall will miss the rest of the 2007 Super League season in order to undergo full knee reconstruction surgery.
The 25-year-old, who signed a new three-year contract at the Galpharm Stadium only last week, was carried off midway through his side's 47-28 defeat to Warrington Wolves on Sunday.
And the club today announced that the extent of his injury was far worse than first feared, meaning he would need a recovery period of several months.
"The extent of the injury is a massive blow to us," said Giants coach Jon Sharp, who was also without Aspinwall's services at the start of the campaign as he was recovering from groin surgery.
"I really feel sorry Martin. It was a slow start for him but, once he got up and running, he was showing some of his best form and the form that got him on a Great Britain tour.
"To lose someone as important as him is a blow but someone else gets an opportunity in the team."
The injury to Aspinwall a key man in their backs division could not have come at a worse time for the Giants.
They are currently in free-fall in Super League, having dropped from fourth to ninth outside the play-offs top-six in the space of five games. They have collected just a single point since the middle of May.
