Giants secure Wild future
12/07/2007
Super League side Huddersfield Giants have agreed a new three-year contract with back-row forward Stephen Wild.
The 26-year-old Great Britain international will be staying at the Galpharm Stadium until at least the end of the 2010 season.
Wild joined from Wigan Warriors in time for the beginning of the 2006 season and his excellent form for his new side has earned him two international caps, including a start in the 42-14 victory over France last month.
And despite being linked with a number of other Super League clubs earlier this season, he has chosen to remain in West Yorkshire.
"I love it here and that's why I'm staying," he said.
"I did have the opportunity to go to St Helens and there were a number of other Super League clubs who were really interested in signing me but I think we've got a lot of success ahead here at the Giants.
"Turning down clubs of this stature is a tough decision to take. But when you're as happy as you are at a club and you're getting the best coaching you've ever had, there's no way you want to leave.
"I've made the right choice."
Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp was equally pleased to have fended off rival clubs to keep one of their most prized assets.
"I think this news sends out a clear statement. For Stephen to be courted by the top clubs in the competition and decide to stay with the Giants is something that fills me with pride," he said.
"It confirms for me that he is in the right place with the right coach and that he believes the club can continue to go forward.
"Stephen is a highly ambitious individual and is very keen to win things. By signing this new deal, he obviously believes he can win things at the Giants."
Unfortunately for Wild, this season does not look too promising as far as silverware goes.
The Giants have already been knocked out of the Challenge Cup by Bradford Bulls at the quarter-final stage and they are on a poor run in Super League. Just a solitary point from their last five matches has seen the team drop from fourth to ninth position and out of the end-of-season play-off places.
