Gidley tips Johns for Warrington return

04/01/2007

St Helens new boy Matt Gidley has hinted that Australian legend Andrew Johns may make a sensational return to Super League side Warrington in 2008.

Gidley shed light on his former Newcastle Knights team-mate's intentions as he was unveiled at Knowsley Road after making his own switch to the northern hemisphere.

"We couldn't shut him up talking about Warrington. I'm sick of hearing about Warrington," Gidley said of the fabled half-back.

"He had a wonderful time there and he might even come back. It depends how things work out with Newcastle - whether he retires."

Johns' previous stint at the Wolves was short but sweet, making three appearances during a short-term deal to bolster their play-offs campaign in 2005.

Newcastle Knights have tied the 32-year-old up until 2008, but a comeback at the Halliwell Jones Stadium would still be attractive to both club and player when that contract comes to an end.

A record 242 games in Australia's National Rugby League, 21 Test appearances for the Kangaroos and the award of the Most Valuable Player of the 1995 World Cup have ensured Johns' place as one of the game's greats.
