Great Britain suffer record Kiwi loss

11/11/2006

Great Britain suffered a demoralising 34-4 loss to New Zealand in the Tri-Nations today that sees them drop behind the Kiwi's in the table and needing a result against Australia next week.

The first try came just after Great Britain's Keith Senior and New Zealand's Steve Matai were sent to the sinbin. Nigel Vagana was able to dummy at the play the ball and power over after 11 minutes.

Brent Webb extended the lead five minutes later, finishing off a sweeping move to make it 10-0.

Great Britain then struck back for what was to be their only points of the game as Gareth Ellis collected a high ball after the New Zealand wing had fumbled it to present him with the easy score.

The score was 16-4 at half time as the Kiwis added another try from Webb after Leon Pryce had knocked on at the play the ball.

The home side were able to score at regular intervals throughout the second half as Britain tried to make a comeback, only to be met by a determined New Zealand defence.

Nathan Cayless scored the next try after 50 minutes, collecting a chip from Stacey Jones and Manu Vatuvei made the Lions defence pay again five minutes later as he went over in the corner to make it 28-4.

Britain were left frustrated when a Pryce try was harshly ruled out for obstruction, but it would have made little difference to the outcome.

Ruben Wiki added the final score with ten minutes to go as he collected a Jones kick that rebounded off the crossbar of the goal to end the humiliation.
