Harlequins hand Saints shock defeat
09/02/2007
Harlequins started their Super League campaign with an unexpected win on the road against current champions St Helens, winning 14-6 at Knowsley Road.
In freezing conditions it was the visitors who struck first. Danny Orr intercepted James Roby's pass and ran 50 yards to return it for the try.
Minutes later Saints replied with a try of their own Leon Pryce set Matt Gidley free and he was able to take advantage of the Quins defence.
However, the home side looked devoid of ideas after the break and never seriously threatened the Harlequins goal line.
The Londoners made sure of the win with two more tries in the second half. Lee Hopkins finished a well worked counter-attacking move before Jon Wells sealed the points 20 minutes from time.
Quins then defended their eight point advantage with aplomb to ensure an eye-catching start to their Super League season.
In the night's other game Wigan were unable to beat Warrington despite a record crowd of 21, 693 at the JJB Stadium.
The Wolves won 16-10 as Lee Briers ability with the boot proved to be the difference between the sides.
Richie Barnett opened the scoring for Warrington and a Vinnie Anderson try meant that the visitors went into half time with a 12-2 advantage.
The Warriors fought back in the second half through Mark Calderwood and David Vaealiki but Briers boot was always able to keep them at arms length.
Warrington will be pleased with the away win but Chris Bridge and Adrian Morley picked up injuries which could leave them sidelined for some time.
