High-flying Hull shock Leeds

12/05/2006

Gareth Raynor scored a hat-trick as Hull shocked Leeds 44-28, their first win in 12 Super League encounters between the two sides.

Richard Horne, Shayne McMenemy and Kirk Yeaman crossed in addition to Raynor's hat-trick as Hull built a 36-6 lead, with Paul Cooke adding six conversions.

Richie Mathers scored Leeds' opening try and they rallied late on through Danny McGuire and Keith Senior (two).

Rob Burrow kicked four goals for Leeds, while Cooke scored a penalty and converted Nathan Blacklock's late try.

Hull, who have won their last six games, were razor-sharp and went into a 24-6 half-time lead that was too much even for a resurgent Leeds.

After putting 40 points past Wigan in the first half last week, Hull are the Super League's form team and are now third in the table.

Leeds stay second but will be licking their wounds after falling further behind St Helens, who suffered a massive second-half scare before Ade Gardner's late try broke Warrington's hearts to win 34-22.

Lee Gilmour's first-half double and further tries by Gardner and Vinnie Anderson put Saints comfortably on top with a 26-4 half-time lead.

But after the break, tries by Henry Fa'afili, Richie Barnett and a penalty try put the Wolves back in contention.

In the dying seconds, with the Wolves inches away from a score-levelling try, Gardner intercepted and sprinted the length of the pitch to score.
