Huddersfield Giants capture Australian star Carney

04/09/2008

Huddersfield Giants have shown their desire to be Super League champions by completing the signing of exciting Australian stand-off Todd Carney.

The 22-year-old was one of the rising stars of the National Rugby League (NRL) in Australia with the Canberra Raiders. But he was controversially sacked after being involved in a number of off-field alcohol related incidents.

Carney, who was voted by NRL fans as the player they would most like to have in their team last season, has vowed to put his career back on track and lead the Giants to Super League success.

"I see this move as a fresh start for me away from the issues in the NRL and I can't wait to get cracking," said Carney.

"I asked my manager to get me to a club that can win things and the ambition shown by Huddersfield has convinced me that they can do just that.

"I would like to thank the club for having the confidence in me and I look forward to repaying that on and off the field for them and getting back into training and playing the game I love."

The signing of Carney comes on the back of another Australian star, Brett Hodgson, also joining the Giants, as well as Nathan Brown taking over as coach.

Huddersfield managing director Richard Thewlis described Huddersfield as "a very attractive option for the world's best" and felt the signing of Carney would be the biggest made by any club in Super League club this season. ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18765628-ADNFCR
