Hull KR go top after thrilling win
11/03/2007
Hull KR moved to the top of the Super League table after a thrilling 22-20 win over Leeds at New Craven Park.
Tries from James Webster, Luke Dyer and Andreas Bauer were enough to secure the points for Hull KR, who have now won four of their opening five games since being promoted from the National League.
Justin Morgan's side began the game uncertainly and were fortunate not to go behind within the opening minutes. Jamie Jones Buchanan got round the back of the Rovers' defence but did not ground the ball in a let-off for the home side.
Nonetheless Leeds led 10-8 at half-time courtesy of tries from Lee Smith and Ashley Gibson, but the inspirational James Webster had already shown that Hull KR's win over Wigan last week was no fluke with a classy try of his own. He chipped over the Leeds defence before collecting his own kick to score.
Smith's contentious score in the corner ensured that Leeds led at the break, but a well-drilled Rovers side soon hit back in the second half with Dyer and Super League debutant Bauer helping their side into a commanding 22-10 lead.
Leeds had dominated the opening exchanges and they once again forced Hull KR onto the back foot as the Rhinos pushed to get back into the game.
But a second try from Gibson following a knock-on from Byron Ford was not converted by Kevin Sinfield and the away side could not make the most of their pressure.
Gibson did complete his hat-trick in the closing moments, but the score and Sinfield's conversion did little other than put a slight gloss on the result for the Rhinos.
Hull KR will go into next week's game with Warrington full of confidence after another impressive win.
