Hull handed Briscoe blow

18/06/2007

Hull FC have been handed a significant injury blow with the news that Shaun Briscoe could face several weeks on the sidelines with a suspected broken jaw.

The full-back, who came on as a replacement during Sunday's 34-8 defeat by Bradford Bulls, was injured midway through the second half.

He left the field for treatment and never returned, joining team-mates Sid Dominic and Garreth Carvell in the physio room after they also added to Hull's growing injury list yesterday.

Hull coach Peter Sharp said: "This is a massive hit to the team. Shaun has been very consistent this season and his contributions will be sorely missed.

"When the injury happened we first thought it was a bad tackle by one of the Bradford players but we have looked back at the game and it was a fair but unfortunate collision."

The match at Odsal was also significant because it was Bulls legend Lesley Vainikolo's final match at the famous ground before he switches codes to join Gloucester.

However the winger was upstaged by team-mate Terry Newton, who ran in four tries to help Bradford keep pace with leaders St Helens and Leeds Rhinos.

New Zealand international Vainikolo plays his final rugby league match this weekend against Leeds at Headingley Carnegie before bidding farewell to the sport.
