Hull re-sign former prop Thackray after Rhinos release
27/03/2008
Hull FC have re-signed former Great Britain international prop Jamie Thackray after he was released by Leeds Rhinos earlier this week.
The 28-year-old agreed a mutual termination of his contract with the Super League champions yesterday and the KC Stadium outfit were quick to move for their former star.
Thackray goes straight into the squad for this weekend's trip to Catalans Dragons and Hull FC chief executive James Rule believes the experienced player will add much-needed depth amid the current injury crisis.
"With our current injury problems we felt this was an opportunity not to be missed and as soon as we heard Leeds had released Thackray we moved in," Rule explained.
"Jamie will strengthen our squad and as we all know from his time at the club he can provide a real explosive impact to games."
Hull head coach Peter Sharp described the signing of Thackray as "a real bonus".
"Jamie is a good player; he provides impact which is something we have lacked a bit of since Garreth Carvell was missing," he added.
Thackray joined Rhinos from Hull in July 2006 for an undisclosed fee and had played a major part in the second half of his new club's season, as well as their run to the grand final in 2007.
However, after missing out on much of their playoff campaign last year under Tony Smith, Thackray also found himself on the sidelines under new coach Brian McClennan and was loaned out to Doncaster earlier this season before agreeing his release.
Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington said: "Unfortunately things have not worked out for Jamie but we wish him all the best for the future."
