Jones extends Catalans stay
06/06/2007
New Zealand scrum-half Stacy Jones has signed a new one-year contract extension at Catalans Dragons that will see him remain at the club until the end of the 2008 season.
Jones, 31, is the club captain in this his second season with the Dragons following his big-money move from New Zealand Warriors for the beginning of the 2006 Super League season.
Christophe Levy, the Perpignan-based club's general manager, says Jones' signature demonstrates the ambition of the team as it attempts to establish itself as a major force in the top flight of European rugby league.
"The signature of Stacey Jones, the best scrum half in the world in 2006, is proof of the vitality of our club and our capacity to attract and keep the best players in the world," he said.
"Stacey has never been disappointed by our club and the extension of the contract until 2008 is evidence that everybody supports our Super League adventure."
Jones himself added: "I am very happy to be a Catalan in 2008 because it will be a determining season for the future of the club.
"My family is very happy in Perpignan, the supporters are great and remind me of those in Auckland. Furthermore I love working with [head coach] Mick Potter, who has done a great job.
"Really there was no reason not to remain for another year in France. We have quite a lot of injured players this season but I am confident when we have our players back, we will make the play-offs."
The Dragons are currently ninth in the 12-team table but are nevertheless only two points behind sixth-placed Huddersfield Giants, who occupy the final play-off spot with six games left to play.
