Kear tips slimline Sculthorpe
28/12/2007
Wakefield Wildcats coach John Kear believes Danny Sculthorpe could take Super League by storm in 2008 after slimming down during the off-season.
The former Wigan Warriors forward and brother of St Helens captain Paul Sculthorpe put in a match-winning performance against grand final winner Leeds Rhinos on Boxing Day.
Two of the player's kicks led to scores for the visitors at Headingley Carnegie as Wildcats surprised the champions with a 26-18 victory.
And Kear said it was this kind of performance that would catapult the 28-year-old into the top bracket of rugby league stars next season after enduring a frustrating, injury-hit season in 2007.
"Anybody who looked at his body shape will see that he has done a lot of hard work," Kear said.
"He has shed the kilos and he's looking much better at this stage of the season than he was last year."
Kear said Sculthorpe would continue to get playing time during the club's warm-up matches ahead of the new season in February "because he gets better the more game time he gets".
"He will get plenty of game time in this trial period so hopefully when we start the season he will be raring to go," Kear added.
