Kemble reaffirmed as Kiwi coach

21/12/2007

The New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) has reaffirmed Gary Kemble as the national team head coach until the end of the 2008 World Cup.

Following a review of the Kiwis' performances over the past year, which included record defeats to Great Britain (44-0) and Australia (58-0), the NZRL have handed down their review of this year's international programme.

Kemble has been given a vote of confidence, despite a series whitewash against Great Britain and defeats to their near neighbours.

And chairman Ray Haffenden said the former international full-back, who was only appointed in August, would be given more time to shape the side in his image.

"Gary has the board's support to continue as coach through to the World Cup, as he was contracted to do when he was appointed," said Haffenden.

"In beginning our review of the tour today, our focus was on the head coach's job and, after considering reports, we have stayed with the status quo."

Kemble himself said: "The Test against Australia and the following tour to Britain and France provided a difficult assignment for everyone involved.

"While results didn't go the way we hoped, I have always wanted to continue in the role.

"There's much work to be done and I'm confident the Kiwis will perform well in next year's centenary Test against Australia and then in the World Cup."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18404989-ADNFCR
