King bears the bruises as Warrington battle to victory

09/03/2008

Warrington survived an injury to captain Matt King as they secured 32-20 Super League win over Wigan.

Tries from Andy Coley, Darrell Goulding and Harrison Hansen proved to be of consolation as Wigan failed to battle back into a disjointed contest at the Halliwell Jones.

The tie was marred by a red card for Richie Mathers after his high-arm challenge forced Wolves captain Matt King to be stretchered off early into the second half.

Wigan momentarily had just 11 men on the pitch after referee Steve Ganson had sin-binned Michael Mcllorum before Mathers was sent off.

Tries from Vinnie Anderson, King and Chris Hicks gave the Wolves a 16-4 lead at the break, before Martin Gleeson, Paul Johnson and Hicks ran over in the second half to give the hosts an unassailable lead.

"We gave ourselves too much to do but we didn't give in when we down to 12 men and 11 at one stage. You could see the effort and that is pleasing," Wigan head coach Brian Noble told the BBC.

Warrington coach Paul Cullen commented: "It was a really tough win and we're delighted with it.

"We held our composure and our discipline sufficiently to control the game when we needed to," he said.

Meanwhile, Simon Finnigan's late try helped Bradford secure a 20-18 victory away to the Catalans Dragons after the hosts lead 18-14 in the closing stages.

Harlequins ran away with a comfortable 24-0 win against Huddersfield with tries from Chad Randall, David Howell, Rikki Sheriffe and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook helping their side to a fourth consecutive Super League victory.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18501096-ADNFCR
