Last-gasp Wigan snatch Headingley win
11/04/2007
A try from Wigan Warriors' Phil Bailey in the dying seconds settled an electrifying engage Super League match against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley.
Bailey's last-ditch score sealed a 20-18 victory for the visitors, who took advantage of Rhinos centre Keith Senior's mistake when he passed the ball into touch at the death.
From the resulting possession, Warriors went down the field to overturn the home side's seemingly game-winning 18-16 lead.
A see-saw match saw Wigan go in at the break 8-4 ahead, despite conceding the opening try to Senior, before storming out of the blocks in the second period to stretch out a 16-4 lead.
A try from Mark Calderwood early in the second period helped Wigan take control, despite having key man Stuart Fielden sin-binned for interference in the tackle after an extended period that saw both sides bending the rules continuously.
Later in the second half Leeds stormed back with two superb tries from Rob Burrow and Gareth Ellis to take an 18-16 lead.
But just when it seemed Rhinos were about to take top spot in the Super League, Senior made his ill-advised offload to gift Wigan possession.
And the last-gasp winner helped move them into the top four for the first time in 2007. Leeds stay third, level on points with Bradford Bulls and St Helens.
