Lions employ Lyon to spy

17/04/2006

Great Britain have handed former St Helens full-back Dave Lyon the role of watching potential internationals in action.

Ahead of this year’s Tri-Nations tournament the Lions are looking for any way to boost their hopes of claiming the prestigious crown.

The tournament which pits Great Britain against New Zealand and Australia will be staged in Auckland in October.

And Lyon will be given a watching brief ahead of the tournament and will spend the summer watching Super League fixtures in the search for new talent to introduce into the national team.

The former Great Britain player said: "Regular monitoring of this type is an important element of the selection process.

"I am looking forward to beginning this key element of preparation and working with both club coaching staff and the Great Britain coaching team in these areas."

Lyon will be responsible for discussing the new breed of internationals with the existing Great Britain coaching set up and contributing to selection meetings which will be held ahead of the autumn competition.

The task of winning the notoriously elusive cup will be made even more difficult by the scheduling of the games which will see Australia and New Zealand play each other twice before Great Britain face their opening tie against New Zealand.
