Lockyer tempted by Super League
15/02/2007
Australian rugby league superstar Darren Lockyer has admitted that he could be persuaded to come and ply his trade in England as he nears the end of his career.
The 29-year-old five-eighth is widely regarded as the best player in the world and after achieving all he can in his homeland he is tempted to follow many other Antipodean stars in making the trip to the northern hemisphere.
"A lot of Australian players have come to Super League towards the end of their career and it's one of those things where I'm curious about it," he told the BBC.
"If the body still feels as good as it does now, then it's definitely an option."
Lockyer is currently in the UK preparing with his Brisbane Broncos team-mates for the World Club Challenge against Super League champions St Helens.
Should his side emerge victorious from Bolton's Reebok Stadium on February 23rd, then it will cap a remarkable season for Lockyer who has picked up the Telstra Premiership, State of Origin and Tri-Nations trophies already.
While he is contemplating his future with three years left to run on his current club contract, the Kangaroos skipper believes that the domestic game in his homeland still has the edge over its English counterpart.
"You have to front up every week and that's what the NRL is renowned for. With Super League, the top teams might get a few weeks when they have easier games. I just think the NRL is a mentally tougher competition," he said.
