Long backs long-shot Lions for Aussie test
17/11/2006
Great Britain are gearing up for the crunch clash with Australia in tomorrow's decisive Tri-Nations game.
The Lions go into the game as underdogs, with the side's crushing 34-4 defeat against New Zealand last week meaning they have to win or draw to reach the competition final.
Their cause has not been helped by the unscheduled departure of influential half-back Sean Long, who flew home earlier this week citing personal reasons and burn-out.
However, Long himself told BBC Radio Five Live he was confident the team could deliver, insisting they had the skill to repeat their historic win over the Australians a fortnight ago.
"I've been with the boys and they're a cracking bunch of lads," he said. "They've got every chance of doing it.
"It is going to be tough but I'm sure the lads can lift for one more game."
Coach Brian Noble has also played up the team's chances, insisting the side can compete.
"We fully understand Australia are a pretty good team but we think we are as well," he said.
