Lyon quits Saints for Manly

05/07/2006

St Helens star Jamie Lyon has rocked the club by agreeing to move to Australian NRL outfit Manly Sea Eagles next season.

The 24-year-old former Test centre has been one of the Saints' key players over the past two seasons but has now signed a four-year with the Sea Eagles.

He will link up with his new team at the end of the current Super League season and admits he is looking forward to being reunited with former mentor Noel Cleal.

"I understand the culture at Manly, the training facilities at the academy of sport are first class and the coaching team under Des Hasler are doing a great job," he added.

"Once my contract is finished at St Helens I will be looking at a return to Australia, a strong off season of training and a return to the NRL competition."

Manly chief Paul Cummings said he was delighted to have secured the signing of Lyon as the club continues its radical overhaul to only bring in young talented players.

"Jamie Lyon continues the plan formulated a few seasons ago and we are delighted he will be in maroon and white for the next four seasons," he said.

"He is only 24 years of age and considered one of the finest players in the game."

Lyon will join fellow new purchases Ben Kennedy, Brent Kite, Matt Orford and Steve Bell at Manly next season.
