Mathers returns to Super League
06/11/2007
Former Leeds Rhinos full-back Richie Mathers is to make a surprise return to Super League after agreeing a three-year-deal with Wigan Warriors.
The 24-year-old has been released a year early from his present contract with Australian National Rugby League side Gold Coast Titans to enable the switch to the JJB Stadium.
The cross-code departure of Chris Ashton to Northampton and the retirement of Michael Withers has opened up a vacancy for Mathers in the Wigan backline, although the second and third years of his contract at the club are dependent on him overcoming knee surgery and featuring in a certain number of matches.
However Mathers is confident that he can make his stay a prolonged one and help the Warriors go one better than the Super League final eliminator that they managed this year.
"It's a fantastic chance for me to join the greatest name in rugby league," said Mathers.
Mathers joined the Titans almost exactly a year ago, but his time in the southern hemisphere was blighted by injury and homesickness.
"I have had a great time in Australia and thank everyone at the club for the way they have looked after me on and off the field," he said.
"My experiences in the NRL have improved me as a player and I'm well on the way to full fitness."
Mathers is the first signing since Ian Lenagan took ownership of the club and coach Brain Noble believes that he represents a sound investment.
"We are thrilled to get hold of a player of Richard's ability. He is an outstanding acquisition and an outstanding individual," he said.
"He has played in Grand Finals and in the NRL. He is used to pressure football and will be a tremendous asset for the Wigan club."
