McKenna confirms shock Doncaster move

12/09/2007

Former Australian Test centre Chris McKenna has announced he will make a surprise move from Super League contenders Bradford Bulls to National League Two side Doncaster Lakers.

The 32-year-old will join the South Yorkshire outfit on a part-time, two-year contract at the end of the season.

McKenna has played at the peak of the sport for a number of clubs including Leeds Rhinos, London Broncos and NRL side Cronulla Sharks.

He is a versatile option for new Lakers coach John Stankevitch as an accomplished second row, although he earned his two international caps playing at centre.

And McKenna claimed the move suited his new focus in life, saying he wishes to pursue a number of business interests outside professional rugby league.

"I'm still playing well but I just didn't want to go one season too long at the top level," he said.

"Going part-time works well for me and for Doncaster. I'm chasing up some business interests, while they only train two evenings a week."

The Lakers were relegated from National League One this season. They finished bottom of their league and also had six points deducted for breaching insolvency rules because they almost went out of business.

Conversely the Bulls are still pursuing the Super League crown after comfortably securing qualification for the end-of-season play-offs.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18276480-ADNFCR
