McRae happy to win ugly
16/06/2007
New Salford coach Shaun McRae has claimed that as long as the wins keep coming he does not mind how they arrive after his team emerged triumphant from Super League's first ever try-less match.
The bottom club overcame Harlequins 5-2 in a dour clash played in heavy rain at the Willows on Friday evening.
McRae admitted that two points was the only priority in his first match after signing a four-and-a-half year deal with the strugglers on Monday.
"I've been involved with some good records and some poor ones, and I'm not sure where this one fits," the former South Sydney boss said.
"Yes, there was a lot of errors with the ball and I think the supporters understood that. But we've got the win and that's all that matters."
The win moves Salford to within a point of Hull KR and Warrington and the Australian is confident that he can continue the rise towards safety.
"There wasn't a lot of quality at times but we've got something to build on now. I'll admit I didn't even know a lot of the players before I joined the club, but I've learned a lot about them tonight."
Survival amongst the sport's elite is considered essential by the club's officials with a planned switch to a new 20,000-seater stadium due in 2009.
