Millward set for Cowboys role

16/06/2006

Ian Millward has today been appointed assistant coach at the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys for next season.

The successful former St Helens and Wigan Warriors coach will be Graham Murray's number two at the club.

Millward started out his career in Australia with St George-Illawarra and admits that after eight years in England he is delighted to be returning down under.

"I achieved all of my goals and dreams in the UK and have always had a desire to return to the National Rugby League in Australia," he said.

"The age and quality of the Cowboys players along with the profile of the club were big factors in settling with the North Queensland Cowboys."

Cowboys chief Peter Parr revealed he is convinced Millward can help reinvigorate the North Queensland club.

"Securing Ian as an assistant to Graham Murray is a real coup for the Toyota Cowboys," he added.

"Winning five major titles during his time in the UK shows that we are getting a coach of the highest calibre."

Millward led the Saints to unprecedented success in the Super League, winning the title in 2000 and then again in 2002.

He also won the Challenge Cup in 2001 and 2004, as well as the World Club Challenge in 2001, after beating the Brisbane Broncos.
