Morley handed Wolves captaincy
17/01/2008
Adrian Morley has been named as Warrington Wolves' captain for the 2008 Super League season, taking over from Lee Briers who has stepped down.
The 30-year-old Morley, a Great Britain international, joined the club from Bradford Bulls and is one of Warrington's most decorated and experienced players.
After a conversation with head coach Paul Cullen, Briers decided to give up the captaincy in order to ease the pressure on him.
And Morley, who has 30 international caps, said he is happy to be able to take on the role and lead the Wolves into the upcoming campaign.
"It's a real honour to captain the side," the former Sydney Roosters NRL star explained.
"It's something that I'm really looking forward to [and] I'm excited to take up the challenge."
Cullen said he thought Morley was "the obvious choice".
"His seniority and his international record was a major factor in my decision process," the coach explained.
"He has all the right attributes - the way he lives his life, his attitude at training and his attitude on the field is simply first class."
And on the decision to relieve long-serving Briers of his duties, Cullen added: "I felt going forward that we needed to take the pressure off Briers, both on and off the field, and relive him of the pressure of responsibility for everything we do on the field coming from him.
"The bottom line is I want him to turn up for work with a smile on his face to play football, and have the responsibility for that and that only."
Wolves number nine Jon Clarke, who has been at the club since 2001 and is now a Great Britain international, has been named as Morley's vice captain.
