Morley named Lions skipper

10/06/2007

Warrington's Adrian Morley has been named captain of the Great Britain side for the Test against France at Headingley Carnigie on June 22nd.

Lions coach Tony Smith said Morely had all the necessary attributes to lead the team and set an example to the rest of the players.

Britain will be without a number of key personnel as Smith allows senior players to rest while giving younger prospects the opportunity to shine.

Smith said: "The squad I'll name on Tuesday will feature some new faces so it is important that they have an experienced leader that some of the younger players can look up to and learn from.

"Adrian fits the bill perfectly, having represented his country on many occasions with great esteem."

Paul Sculthorpe and Jamie Peacock, who have both captained the Lions since the departure of Andy Farrell to rugby union, will both miss the game.

Morley was delighted to be named captain in their absence and said it would be the best moment of his career.

He said: "It's a massive honour to be named Great Britain captain and I'm extremely proud.

"Captaining the national side is something I've always wanted to do and leading the team out against France will be the highlight of my career so far."

Morley recently returned to the British game after playing in Australia for six years with the Sydney Roosters.

He has won 26 caps for the Lions since making his international debut in 1996.
