Newton faces disciplinary charge

05/03/2007

Bradford star Terry Newton will face a disciplinary hearing tomorrow charged with striking an opponent.

The Great Britain hooker was reported for a challenge on St Helens forward Jon Wilkin during the Bulls' 34-22 defeat to Saints on Friday night.

St Helens ended the game with 11 men due to the injuries to Lee Gilmour and Wilkin, who was the victim of a high tackle from Newton.

Newton will face a Rugby Football League hearing tomorrow to explain the incident at Knowsley Road after the League's video review panel decided he has a case to answer.

If found guilty, he could miss the Bulls' crunch games against Salford City, Harlequins and Catalans Dragons.

The controversial 28-year-old missed the first 11 matches of last season after being banned for dangerous tackles on Sean Long and Gilmour while playing for Wigan.

Newton joined the Bulls from the Warriors at the end of the 2005 season and is regarded as one of the best forwards in the game.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield centre Jamahl Lolesi faces a similar charge following the Giants' 16-12 defeat by Leeds Rhinos on Sunday.

But Wakefield prop Danny Sculthorpe, who was placed on report for a late challenge during the Wildcats' 19-6 win at Hull, will face no further action.
