No Saints return for Wolves pair
05/06/2007
Warrington duo Martin Gleeson and Vinnie Anderson look set to miss a clash against former club St Helens in Saturday's Challenge Cup quarter-final.
Both players were forced out of their team's Super League defeat to Leeds on Friday and coach Paul Cullen has admitted he is likely to be without the pair once again at Knowsley Road.
"Vinnie Anderson has almost no chance of being available and Martin Gleeson's prospects are slim," he said.
While a back injury has accounted for Anderson's absence, Gleeson is battling with a knee injury in a bid to face his former team-mates.
"If we can get Martin anywhere near fit, then we will play him in this game. We won't save him for Wakefield the following week," Cullen said.
A dismal run of form has taken the Wolves dangerously close to the Super League trapdoor with just three points separating them from bottom club Salford.
But Cullen is determined that his team keep battling on two fronts rather than preserve their energy for a forthcoming basement scrap.
"The Challenge Cup is very, very important to us, it's as important as our League position. We do not have the luxury of resting players and, if we did, we wouldn't do it any way," he continued.
"We will go as strong as we possibly can, as we have done in every game that we've played."
By contrast Cullen's Saints counterpart Daniel Anderson has a raft of top names returning for the Wolves' visit.
Paul Wellens, Matt Gidley, Jon Wilkin, James Roby and Maurie Fa'asavalu will all be available for the match although scrum-half Sean Long is rated as only a 50-50 chance.
