"No possibility" of Chambers making Castleford debut
02/04/2008
There is "no possibility" of Dwain Chambers making his debut for Castleford Tigers this weekend, the Super League strugglers have said.
Chambers had been linked with a shock first-team appearance this weekend, days after agreeing to a four-week trial.
In a statement the club insisted the disgraced sprinter's Rugby League learning curve was just beginning.
"Dwain has undergone a full Rugby League related fitness test and will take part in training sessions on Thursday and Friday," a message on the Tigers' official website read.
"Subject to an assessment of his performance in these sessions by our coaching staff he may be considered for selection in the Tigers reserve team which will also play on Sunday."
Club chief executive Richard Wright added: "We wish to make our position regarding Dwain Chambers' clear to our supporters and fans in general. He is with us as a trialist at this stage and is just beginning his Rugby League education.
"We will continue to work with him on this basis so that both Dwain and the Castleford club can benefit from the experience."
Earlier this week head coach Terry Matterson said the 60m World Indoor Championship silver medallist was "50-50" to face Challenge Cup holders St Helens due to Castleford's depleted squad.
Chambers, who was banned for two years in 2004 after failing a drugs test, subsequently brushed with an NFL career before injury cut his chances short.
Speaking to reporters as he was unveiled as a Castleford trialist he said: "The only football experience I've had was when I was playing American football last year and the only experience I've had of rugby was when I was doing a photo shoot the other day with a ball in my hands.
"But I'm here to learn and I'm confident about what I can achieve."
