Noble demands more from Wigan

13/05/2006

Head coach Brian Noble has demanded more from his players ahead of bottom club Wigan Warriors' clash with Wakefield.

The Warriors have suffered a nightmare season and the club, who dominated the sport in the 1990s, now find themselves in danger of dropping out of the Super League.

Now Noble has demanded that his players dig in and stop the club from being doomed with only half the season gone.

"We have to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and start performing," Noble told Wigan's official website.

"I think the potential here is terrific and I intend to do something about that potential and put this club back up again where it should be."

Their opponents currently sit four points and two places above them and inflicted a 40-14 defeat when they met last month.

Wigan know that defeat tonight would mean that a gap would start to open up and that relegation would be a distant possibility.

However, coach Tony Smith insists that the club can get out of their current predicament because the league this year is very close.

"I don't think anyone in their right mind would have thought Wigan would be bottom halfway through the season but it's proved that games aren't won on paper," Smith said.

"The teams are getting closer and Huddersfield's win over St Helens shows that anybody on their day can beat anybody, which is good for the game."

Wigan will have Brett Dallas and David Vaealiki for the game at Belle Vue but Mark Calderwood is out for at least three weeks after tearing a muscle in his chest.
