Potter confirmed as successor to Saints coach Anderson
22/04/2008
St Helens have confirmed Catalans Dragons head coach Mick Potter will take charge of the team from the beginning of the 2009 season.
Current Saints coach Daniel Anderson is due to return to his native Australia at the end of the current Super League campaign.
Potter, who is in his third season with the French side, has long been linked with the future vacancy after compiling an impressive CV in southern Europe.
His achievements include a Challenge Cup final appearance last year and an impressive third place in the league so far this season, and Saints' chairman, Eamonn McManus said the club are "very pleased" to have captured the services of the former Australian international.
"He is a coach with a continuously improving track record and whose career is in the ascendancy," McManus stated.
"We are confident that he can continue the brilliant work which Daniel Anderson has done at the club in the last three years.
"Mick will remain totally committed to the Catalan Dragons for the rest of this season and, likewise, St Helens are in the meantime only interested in further success under Daniel."
Potter described the appointment as "a privilege and an honour" but vowed to keep his focus on the Dragons' 2008 campaign until the winter.
"I am delighted to have been appointed and to be associated with this world famous club. I am looking forward to next season," he said.
"However, my immediate commitment is now to the Catalan Dragons, its players and supporters to continue the good work and progress the club has achieved."
