Prescott joins Hull KR board

18/10/2007

Former deputy prime minister John Prescott has become an associate director of Super League club Hull Kingston Rovers.

The MP for East Hull joins the board in an unpaid capacity, which the club says is to "strengthen… links with the community".

Prescott will also be charged with improving the profile of its Craven Park ground, which is in need of funding for renovation and expansion.

Speaking about his new appointment, Prescott said: "I'm delighted to be joining Hull KR.

"I've always tried to help Rovers over the years but I am now in a position to dedicate more time to help them build on the fantastic success they’ve achieved on and off the pitch."

After winning promotion to the Super League last season, Hull KR established themselves as a force in the top division of European rugby league this year.

They achieved some solid results throughout the season, beating local rivals Hull FC twice including a 42-6 win at the KC Stadium that secured safety.

And Prescott said Rovers "play such an important role in East Hull".

"The club's put a tremendous amount into community initiatives in the last two to three years and I've been particularly impressed with their out of school hours study support centre, helping children to learn independently and improve their numeracy, literacy and ICT skills," he continued.

"I want to play my part in continuing to strengthen their links with the community, local agencies, business and other sporting bodies.

"These are very exciting times to be joining Hull KR and I can't wait to start."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18321528-ADNFCR
