Quins halt Hull's winning run
22/07/2006
Harlequins stopped Hull's winning streak on unlucky 13 as Brian McDermott's side held on to win 18-16 in spite of a late rally by the in-form Black and Whites.
Quins turned in a terrific performance to celebrate their new coach's first game in charge at the Stoop, blasting into an early lead as captain Mark McLinden ran the Hull defence ragged.
The skipper seems to be particularly inspired by the new man at the helm and scored a sensational first half hat-trick to take his side into the break with a comfortable 18-2 lead.
That lead grew a lot less comfortable as the game wore on. McLinden's heroic game came to a premature end as he was injured halfway through the second period.
Harlequins' superb full-back was forced from the field after making a try-saving tackle and his departure acted as a spur to the visitors.
Motu Tony and Sid Domic both breached the home side's defence before Nathan Blacklock added a third try two minutes from time to put Hull within two points of stealing an unlikely draw.
Desperate Quins defending finally snuffed out a dangerous last Hull move to the delight of 4,000 home supporters who had endured an agonising finale to the game.
