Quins skipper signs on until 2009

24/05/2006

Harlequins captain Mark McLinden has agreed a three-year contract extension that will keep him at Twickenham Stoop until 2009.

The Australian scrum-half has been at the London rugby league outfit since joining from Canberra Raiders last year.

Upon signing the new contract McLinden said he was "delighted to stay at the club and I think Harlequins Rugby League has a very bright future".

The 26-year-old explained that he shared the ambitions of club chairman Ian Lenagan and wanted to do his utmost to bring success to his club.

He commented: "I have been impressed with the plans laid out by Ian and there is already much evidence about the club of the confidence and ambition he has for us."

Quins boss Tony Rea was pleased to have tied down his captain to a long-term deal, especially because of the challenges facing the club this season and beyond.

"Mark's leadership qualities have become a very important part of this club," he said.

"He has exceptional talent and is a very gifted athlete, in many ways his talent is unique. We are very fortunate to have him here on a long term deal."

Harlequins are currently in tenth position in the Super League, with only four wins in 14 games. Their next match is away at Salford on Monday evening.
