Rea leaves top job at Quins

16/10/2007

Harlequins RL's director of sport Tony Rea has left the club after 13 years to return to his coaching roots.

The Australian first joined the London-based franchise in 1994 as a player before moving on to the board of directors in 2006 via positions as chief executive officer and coach.

During his time in charge of on-the-field affairs the side, then known as London Broncos, featured in the Super League play-offs in 2003 and 2005.

The chance to return to the training pitch has tempted the 41-year-old to set out in search of another club.

"After 13 terrific years, the time has arrived to say that I am leaving to pursue other challenges. I have missed coaching at the highest level, which is where I feel my strengths lie, and will pursue opportunities to do so," he said.

"I wish to thank the club for the many things that it has given me. My experiences here have developed and broadened me. To everybody involved now and in the future, I just ask that you continue to look after the place in the same way."

Rea is expected to remain on at the club in an informal capacity to smooth the transition into a new era while he looks for a suitable position elsewhere.

Ian Lenagan, the club's chairman paid tribute to Rea's work and backed him to prove a success in his next job.

"We are desperately sorry to see Tony go but cannot stand in his way after all that he has given over the years to Broncos and Harlequins," he said.

"Tony's skills in game analysis, tactics, player identification and motivation are of the highest order and some club soon, whether in Australia or in the UK, will gain a superb coach."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18319722-ADNFCR
