Reds relegated after Hull KR victory
02/09/2007
Salford City Reds have been relegated from Super League after Hull Kingston Rovers hammered local rivals Hull FC 42-6 at the KC Stadium.
Needing one win from their remaining three games to survive, Hull KR led 16-0 at the break thanks to tries from Jason Netherton and Luke Dyer.
Mark Lennon crossed the line to make it 22-0 before Hull scored their only try of the game through Danny Washbrook.
James Webster, Stanley Gene and a brace from Rhys Lovegrove sealed the rout while Paul Cooke finished with five goals against his former club.
The result sees Hull KR go five points clear of relegated Salford while Hull remain in fourth spot.
Hull KR coach Justin Morgan said he was thrilled with his side's performance under pressure.
"I enjoyed the last ten minutes for the first time in a long time. There were some great heroes out there," Morgan said.
"We know about the bitterness and anger between the two clubs, not on the pitch but certainly there are the politics being played like my media manager not being allowed in the dressing room and things like that. It's quite satisfying to come here and stuff them.
"It was a nice trademark performance from Paul Cooke, he's a cool customer and he's been very good for us. I've never seen a team execute a game plan as clinically as we did."
Hull coach Peter Sharp admitted his side were embarrassed by their display in the derby.
"They just played better than us, simple as that. They ran with purpose and tackled with commitment and there's the game. That's life," Sharp said.
"This happens in team sports, these things happen. They just beat us to the punch in everything they did. They ran out better than us, they warmed up better than us.
"We'll be OK, we'll dust ourselves off tomorrow and get stuck into it. We were probably a bit full of ourselves to tell the truth. We will bounce back, I promise you."
