Rhinos' Webb to miss World Cup following surgery
08/10/2008
Leeds Rhinos full-back Brent Webb will not be able to represent New Zealand in the forthcoming World Cup after undergoing surgery on his injured back.
Webb did not participate in the Rhinos' victory over Saint Helens in last Saturday's Super League Grand Final due to the knock he picked up against the same side two weeks earlier.
Despite picking up the injury three weeks ago the Kiwis still selected Webb in their 24-man squad for the tournament but will now have to find a replacement.
Leeds said they anticipated the 27-year-old would be ruled out for around six months while he rehabilitates.
Commenting on the surgery Leeds Rhinos head physiotherapist Meirion Jones said: "Brent has had microdiscectomy on acute disc herniation.
"It is hoped that the surgery will clear up Brent's current symptoms however key will be a sustained period of five to six months rehabilitation to compliment the surgery to get Brent back to full fitness."
Webb had been troubled by a sore back for much of the season before he sustained the injury that finally forced him to have surgery and the Rhinos hope he will be able to come back stronger than before.
Head coach Brian McClennan added: "All our thoughts are with Webby at the moment. He is a special guy and someone who we all love dearly.
"We have got an excellent medical staff and they will be making sure that Brent receives the best possible treatment and comes back stronger than ever."
If Webb's rehabilitation does take the full six months then not only would he miss the World Cup but he could also be absent for the start of next year's Super League season.
