Rock-bottom Tigers roar back to overcome St Helens

06/04/2008

Castleford came from behind to beat St Helens 30-24 in Super League at the Jungle.

The Saints led 16-10 at the break thanks to tries from Paul Clough, Maurie Fa'asavalu and Ade Gardner.

Castleford kept themselves in the game with a try from 18-year-old Joe Westerman.

The Tigers reduced their deficit in the second half through Richard Owens but St Helens hit back with Stephen Tyrer crashing over.

Westerman, who also kicked two goals, then grabbed his second for the home side while Dixon's brace put the Tigers six points behind.

In the closing stages, Luke Dorn pounced on a blunder from full-back Paul Wellens to seal victory.

Disgraced sprinter Dwain Chambers, who joined the Tigers last Monday, was presented to the fans.

Tigers coach Terry Matterson said Chambers' appearance boosted his players.

"There was a whole heap of media this week and I just felt the players dropped their shoulders and had a little bit of fun with Dwain coming in," Matterson said.

"I probably can't give him any kudos for that performance, but just having him around has been good.

"It was good for us to be in the spotlight for once but I'm not sure when Dwain will be ready to play."

Saints coach Daniel Anderson slammed his side for their below-par second half display.

"We need to wake up and realise that there are too many good teams and when they have momentum they are very dangerous," Anderson said.

"Castleford and Wakefield are dangerous and we did not respect that. They performed, we didn't and that's the bottom line."

The win for rock-bottom Castleford sees them close the gap on 11th-placed Hull to a point, while 2006 champions St Helens slip to seventh spot.

Elsewhere, Wakefield beat Warrington 16-2 at Belle Vue thanks to tries from Sam Grix and Greg Obst while Danny Brough kicked four penalties.

The Wildcats, who had Ben Westwood sent off, climb to ninth position while Warrington stay in fourth.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18538915-ADNFCR
