Rooney set for early return
04/04/2007
Wakefield star Jamie Rooney could be in line for a surprise return to action against Huddersfield on Good Friday after making a swift recovery from a leg injury.
The 29-year-old England stand-off suffered a torn quad muscle in the Wildcats' 30-24 victory over Warrington Wolves on March 25th which was expected to keep him out for most of this month.
However Rooney has been given the all-clear for the Easter Monday game against the engage Super League joint-leaders Bradford Bulls and could even be ready in time for the fixture against Huddersfield on Friday.
"The physio has done a great job with him but he is a very determined kid," said Wakefield head coach John Kear.
"He's an even-money chance for Friday and a certainty for Monday."
Rooney was the Super League player of the month for February and has played an important part in the Wildcats' good start to the season, which has seen them climb to a share of the lead with traditional powerhouses Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos.
Wakefield were one of the least-favoured teams before the season began but five wins from their first seven matches, in large part due to the points-scoring prowess of Rooney, have put them among the elite already.
