Saints cruise past Bulls
20/05/2006
St Helens romped to a comprehensive 42-18 win over Bradford Bulls in the fifth-round of the Challenge Cup.
The Bulls were a pale imitation of their usual selves and did not even come close to upsetting Saints who ran in seven tries.
Hooker Keiron Cunningham got the Saints off to a perfect start when he forced his way over the line with just 94 seconds on the clock.
It was a sign of things to come and Saints extended their lead when loose forward Jason Hooper made a break and the full-back Paul Wellens crossed the line.
The third try came when Francis Meli put second row Lee Gilmour in the position to grab another score.
Paul Sculthorpe gave the ball away to allow the Bulls to get a try back when they were 20-0 down.
The lead was instantly restored as Jamie Lyons crossed for Saints after collecting his own kick and the game was virtually over as the half-time hooter sounded.
Nick Fozzard got Saints' try scoring underway in the second half and then Cunnigham got his second as the rain teemed down.
Centre Willie Talau finished the scoring for Saints before a late double from full-back Michael Withers gave Bradford some respectability.
In the day's other Challenge Cup game Harlequins RL had a field day as they powered in 14 tries to beat lower league Barrow 82-8.
