Saints go marching on

18/05/2007

Reigning champions St Helens moved to the top of Super League after a 34-14 win over Wakefield at Knowsley Road.

The Saints, who led 16-8 at the break, were guided by tries from Leon Pryce, Ade Gardner, and two tries apiece from Matt Gidley and Paul Wellens.

Paul Sculthorpe kicked five goals for the hosts to move the Saints above Leeds into top-spot with the Rhinos clashing with Hull on Sunday.

The Wildcats scored tries from new signing Sean Gleeson and Olivier Elima while Jamie Rooney kicked two goals.

Elsewhere, Huddersfield produced an explosive first-half display to beat Bradford 36-12 at the Galpharm Stadium.

The in-form Giants rammed in four tries in the first period through Stephen Wild, John Skandalis, Stuart Jones, and skipper Chris Thorman.

Another try from Thorman, who also kicked four goals, and Kevin Brown in the second half completed the rout.

The below-par Bulls improved in the second half with tries from Lesley Vainolkolo and Iestyn Harris.

The result sees Huddersfield climb to fourth place while the Bulls slip to third.

Hull KR boosted their survival hopes with a 12-10 win over Wigan at the JJB Stadium.

The visitors, who led 10-0 at the break, scored two tries through Luke Dyer and Ian Hardman while star man Paul Cooke kicked two crucial goals.
