Saints romp to easy win

13/04/2007

St Helens remain top of the Super League after an easy 53-10 win over the Catalan Dragons at Knowsley Road with Paul Wellens grabbing four tries.

The home side never looked troubled by their opponents; scoring at will while their defences were breached just twice.

Julien Touxagas gave the Catalans a surprise lead after eight minutes before Saints responded with tries from Jason Cayless, Leon Pryce, Kieron Cunningham and Matthew Gidley to give them a 19-6 advantage at the break.

Wellens then kicked into overdrive as he crossed the whitewash an amazing four times in 28 minutes at the start of the second half as the 27-year-old scored the first hat-trick of his illustrious career.

The pick of his tries was his third when some clever interplay with Cunningham released him to run 20 metres and score.

Maurie Fa'asavalu and Francis Meli both scored for Saints before the end in what was a one-sided contest.

Elsewhere Hull overcame Salford to move further away from the bottom of the table after a 35-18 victory away at The Willows.

Salford started the game well scoring two tries in the first ten minutes but Hull responded with tries from Paul Cooke, Matt Sing and Danny Tickle for a 22-12 half-time lead.

John Wilshire reduced Hull's advantage just after the break but Salford could not penetrate the resolute defence of the visitors after that.

Hull scored two more tries as the game was coming to a close which put the game beyond Salford's reach.
