Saints secure Roby and Wellens

18/12/2007

Challenge Cup champions St Helens have secured the services of key men James Roby and Paul Wellens on new long-term contracts.

The Super League side have moved to ensure both players, who played a key part in a successful season for Saints in 2007, will remain at Knowsley Road for the foreseeable future.

Roby, who was named the man of steel at the age of just 21 this year, has signed a four-year contract with the club which will keep him tied to the team until at least the end of 2011.

And Wellens, 27, has signed a three-year deal, meaning he will be a Saints player until at least the end of 2010.

Club chairman Eamonn McManus said he is under no illusions about how important it was to secure the services of both players.

"I'm sure this announcement will come as a great early Christmas present for all Saints fans," he commented.

"There was significant interest in James which is understandable as he is one of the hottest properties in the game.

He continued: "Paul has established himself as the best full-back in the game and will continue to play a pivotal role as the club moves forward."

Wellens and Roby have emerged from the club's youth academy setup and are lifelong Saints players.

"Both have become an integral part of the club's success as well as being excellent ambassadors for St Helens," McManus added.

"Going forward, they will continue to be the backbone of the club over the forthcoming seasons as we signal our intention to bring even more silverware to Knowsley Road."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18399019-ADNFCR
