Saints tie down star quartet
22/05/2007
St Helens have announced extensions to the contracts of former Great Britain pair Sean Long and Keiron Cunningham as well as new deals for Maurie Fa'asavalu and youngster Scott Moore.
Long had been linked with a move to Australia's NRL but the 30-year-old's decision to commit to Knowsley Road for another two years seems to have put paid to any hopes of luring him down under.
Hooker Cunningham has been at Saints for fourteen seasons after first arriving as a 16-year-old from a local amateur side and is now guaranteed at least another year at the Super League champions.
"Sean Long and Keiron Cunningham have been pivotal to Saints' success over the last decade," said chairman Eamonn McManus.
"I'm sure the same formula will work in the future as we also bring through the great young talent that we are developing at the club."
Fa'asavalu has mainly been employed as an impact substitute by coach Daniel Anderson, but his whole-hearted style has proved popular with the club's fans and he has been rewarded with a three-year extension.
Moore, an 18-year-old scrum-half who could eventually step into Long's role, will also remain with the club until the end of the 2010 campaign.
"The fans will be equally pleased that Maurie is committing long term to the club as he's proving to be one of the best impact props in the game and will improve further," McManus added.
"Scott Moore is one of the best teenage talents around and we again will look to develop his potential to became a regular first team player down the line."
