Salford land Quins star Dorn

09/08/2006

Salford City Reds have pulled off a major coup by signing Australian stand-off Luke Dorn from Harlequins RL.

Reds director of football Steve Simms has been chasing the 24-year-old Australian for over a year and has now finally landed his man on a two-year deal.

Salford are currently fifth in the engage Super League and Simms is confident the try-scoring former Sydney Rooster can help surge the team further up the table.

"Luke has pace to burn," he said. "He is a try-scorer and there is an awful lot of quality there."

Simms added that he is hopeful Dorn can form an exciting and fruitful half-back partnership with the in-form Luke Robinson.

"He has outstanding speed and we are hoping that with the other Luke, Robinson, we will have one of the best half-back partnerships in next year's competition and it will enable us to kick on even further than we have this year."

Dorn arrives to take over from Andrew Dunemann who is set to join Canberra Raiders at the end of this season.

Meanwhile, Reds fans have been given additional reason to cheer today with the news that assistant coach James Lowes has ended speculation around his future by agreeing a two-year contract extension to keep him at the Willows until the end of the 2008 season.

"Jimmy told us he never wanted to leave," Simms said. "He told me just now that he sees a very bright future here at Salford, especially with the new stadium on the horizon and he is desperate to be part of that success.

"He is a great coach and we want to surround our players with men of his calibre."
