Sinfield signs new Rhinos deal
12/10/2007
Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield has agreed a new four-year contract with the club, which will run until the end of the 2011 Super League season.
The 27-year-old Great Britain international's signature is a major boost to the team on the eve of the grand final at Old Trafford against St Helens.
In a statement the club said Sinfield's contract extension "effectively means [he] has committed the remainder of his career to the Headingley Carnegie-based club", where he has plied his trade since his early teens.
Sinfield, who is third on the club's all-time points-scoring list, said he is "delighted" to have agreed his future and described playing for the Rhinos as "a massive honour".
"I never dreamed when I first signed for the club when I was 13 that I would be here so long," he said.
"I am not a Yorkshireman but I am very much a Leeds lad and I feel at home here just as much as the many Leeds born-and-bred players who we have in our side.
"Hopefully, the grand final tomorrow is the start of new era for the club, not the end of one, and I know that at Leeds we have the staff, the players and the support to make the next few years a very special time to be part of this club."
Rhinos and Great Britain head coach Tony Smith said Sinfield is one of the key men for both club and coutry.
"I am delighted for Kevin but also for the club," Smith said.
"He has been a great ambassador for the club as well as a fantastic player. He has achieved so much already in his career by I believe his best years are still to come.
"He is a tremendous leader and will continue to be so. Leeds runs through his veins and his commitment to the club will be an important factor in retaining this group of players for the future."
