Smith looks ahead following loss

21/10/2007

Great Britain coach Tony Smith remained upbeat despite Northern Union's 25-18 loss to New Zealand All Golds at the Haliwell Jones Stadium.

Smith said the game effectively represented an unofficial 'fourth Test' and that his side would be looking to build on their performance ahead of the three-match series with the Kiwis.

He said: "We're not happy about coming second, that's something that has got to change.

"The players who make the cut will benefit from tonight, both from the physical aspect and from the lessons on how to play."

Northern Union twice led thanks to Danny McGuire's 90 metre try, and touch downs from Jon Clarke and Kirk Yeaman.

However Smith was particularly pleased with the performances of captain Adrian Morley and 19 year-old forward Sam Burgess.

"Adrian Morley played all 80 minutes and led from the front and young Sam was outstanding, it was something special for him to remember," said Smith.

New Zealand legend Stacey Jones signed off in style, converting all five of his goal kicks in his final match as a professional.

Jones said the Haka at the start of the game was the most emotional part of the game for him.

He said: "I didn't expect anything like that. It was real special and something I'll remember for the rest of my life."

The Test series begins next Saturday at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium when Smith will be hoping to reverse last night's scoreline.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18324874-ADNFCR
