Smith plays down talk of England call-up
07/10/2008
Leeds Rhinos winger Lee Smith says it is "hard to get [his] head around" his possible selection in the England World Cup squad.
Smith, 22, has been tipped by most pundits as a likely selection by head coach Tony Smith when he named his 24-man lineup for the forthcoming tournament in Australia.
A stellar year for defending champions Leeds in this year's Super League was completed on Saturday evening, when the underdogs overcame heavily-fancied St Helens to successfully retain their title.
Smith's form has been a major part of the Headingley club's excellent run, culminating in his near-seamless switch to full-back on the eve of the Grand Final to cover for the injured Brent Webb.
But the youngster, who has England Academy honours, has played down talk of making the trip down under with the senior squad, saying the decision rests with the coach whether he is picked or not.
"A few people have been saying I'm going to make the World Cup now but it's hard to get your head around that with all that's just happened," Smith said.
"Tony Smith has always played his cards close to his chest when it comes to selection, so I'll have to wait and see."
The final squad to travel to Australia will be revealed at 11:00 BST today.
