Smith to build on Noble's GB legacy

27/03/2007

New Great Britain rugby league coach Tony Smith has vowed to make use of his relationship with his predecessor Brian Noble as he builds his Lions squad ahead of the 2008 World Cup.

The Australian was a controversial selection for the role, with several home-grown options overlooked, but he hopes to fill any gaps in his knowledge of the British game by taking advice from Noble and his Super League peers.

"I will speak to Brian. I hope the friendship we have will be more than helpful," he said.

"I will be trying to get as much information out of him and help from him and from other coaches as well."

Smith has signed a contract with the Rugby Football League until 2009, but will combine the position with his existing coaching job at Leeds Rhinos until the end of the current season.

He believes that his split responsibilities mean he will be better-positioned than most to negotiate the demands placed on top class British talent by their clubs and the national side.

"I certainly want to talk to the coaches about the possibility of resting players when you can. I understand the situation from both sides."

The 44-year-old inherits a team that has fallen behind their southern hemisphere rivals recently, failing to progress to the final of the Tri-Nations tournament on the last two opportunities.
